It has been almost 25 years since Jim Carrey's 'The Cable Guy' came to theatres. But It seems that The Cable Guy just foretold the future we are living in today. Yes, I watched the movie 25 years after its initial release in 1996(though I was born three years later). There is a scene where Chip Douglas (Jim Carrey) sits with his customer(or presumably friend) on a huge satellite dish. He says this quote which in my mind means the world of social media and technology we are living in today.
The Future is now. Soon Every American Home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You'll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on the other. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There is no end to the possibilities.
Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy, 1996
No end to the possibilities indeed. The Cable Guy just described the world of possibilities we are living in. People can shop from home nowadays or play video games or chat with people from anywhere in the world. People often watch T.V. while also calling someone on their phones(or should I say smartphones). They often watch a channel on their T.V and watch videos on smartphones simultaneously. Although there are more possibilities today than The Cable Guy has foreshadowed almost 3 decades ago. However, the same era of endless possibilities even wreaked our brains in equal measures.
People do have an opportunity to lower the load of their daily lives and relaxation but they digitize themselves so much to the point they drop the word natural out of their minds. Though it is not a good analogy it's fact we are missing.
People may not believe me, but this was foreshadowed years ago on the big screen. This is honestly a testament to the age of technology we are living in today. The Cable Guy follows a man who has lost his girlfriend. He calls a Cable Guy who provides him with quality television cable on the cost of a forced friendship with the cable guy. Which in turn makes the man's life a living hell.
